We recently did a post on different ways to prepare ripe avocados. I have to admit, when I first heard about using avocados in smoothies I didn’t think it would taste all that great. I gave it a try and wow! They’re amazing! The avocado made the shake taste creamy and delicious, and didn’t add any kind of overpowering flavor. I gave a small glass to my daughter, and although she was hesitant about the green color, she tried it and loved it.
There are many benefits to eating avocados regularly. They are loaded with antioxidants and carotenoids. They contain both soluble and insoluble fiber which helps to keep your digestive tract healthy. The fiber, along with monounsaturated fats keep you feeling full for longer, and can help to prevent your blood sugar from spiking. What’s more, eating avocado regularly has been shown to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and raise HDL (good) cholesterol (source).
To make a delicious and healthy avocado and banana smoothie all you need is one ripe avocado, one banana, and a cup of skim milk. You can substitute skim milk with soy milk or coconut milk if you prefer.
Mix everything together in the blender and voila!
If you are worried that your kids won’t like the green looking shake, add a half of a cup of frozen blueberries to make it look much more appetizing to them (and taste even more delicious).
This makes a delicious, nutrition-packed breakfast or even a great snack on a warm summer’s day.
