The first of our series on great educational sites for children is all about math. Maybe I am biased but this is one of my favorite sites for helping children who are struggling with math. My children hated math, and were having a difficult time with some of the math concepts they were learning in elementary school. After looking into what is available online, we turned to this site for help. After a few months of doing the online math lessons, the math skills (and grades) of both of our children improved dramatically. I can’t claim that this site made my children like math, but they definitely disliked it less because they were doing better and understood more.
What is IXL? IXL is “a better way to learn math”. This membership based website is full of fun kids math lessons that allow your children to learn and practice math skills from pre-kindergarten to higher grades. The curriculum is customized by country. For example, in the United States it follows the State Standards, and in Canada – the provincial curriculum. It is available in numerous other countries such as Australia and the UK. Children can start at whatever level they would like and progress through the lessons in each of the grades. For some children who are struggling with math at their grade level, it may be beneficial to have them start a grade or two earlier and re-learn the fundamentals that will help them to master their current grade level. That is what we did with our children and it really worked well!
Math is about so much more than just numbers—so, IXL is too! We approach each math concept from all angles, offering visual representations, word problems, interactive activities and more. With an abundance of math problems for every learning style, students can’t help but build lasting skills and confidence.
IXL is a practice environment that rewards hard work—after all, with dynamic, unlimited questions, guessing your way to success isn’t exactly an option. Instead, we encourage students to learn from their mistakes, and move through new challenges at their own pace. There’s no feeling that can match mastering a skill on IXL, since it comes with the satisfaction of knowing you really do “get it.”
The math lessons are fun and colorful to help keep children interested. As your kids progress through their lessons they earn awards and achievements – a great way to keep them motivated. If your children love spending time on the computer (and what kids don’t?) then perhaps you can set up a reward system where 20 minutes on the IXL website earns them 30 minutes of play time.
As a parent, you will be happy to know that IXL sends out weekly email updates on the progress of your child. You can also log in at any time and see reports on where your child is succeeding and where they are having difficulty. This information is truly invaluable if you want to help your child succeed at math.
At the time of writing this, membership is $9.95 per month or you can save money by purchasing a yearly membership for $79 (US and Canada) – a pretty good deal for virtually unlimited fun kids math problems, especially if you consider the cost of a tutor.
